What Does the following colonoscopy Report Indicate?

I just had a colonoscopy. The following was found: Polyp (3 mm) in the sigmoid colon Polyp (2 mm) in the rectum Otherwise normal colon to the cecum.. I am told I need to come back in 1 year to get another colonoscopy. What can you tell me about what the prognosis of such a find is? Is this like finding a dysplastic mole on your skin and removing it cuts down on the chances it will turn into cancer?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

The finding of colonoscopy has revealed small polyps, less than 1 cm. Generally polyps are harmless however they have a tendency to get cancerous especially when they are bigger than 1 cm. Please note that its a tendency which is about 1 percent and need not turn cancerous later at all however, the chance for it to turn cancerous increases as the size of polyp increases.

The reason why your doctor has asked you to review with a fresh colonoscopy is to see whether they grow further in size or not. I would advise you to get them removed if you see an increase in size in next colonoscopy. Polyps have low grade dysplasia.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Anoop Kumar, General & Family Physician
